Event: Ride the Bus On Earth Day!

The Cities of Santa Rosa and Sebastopol invite those with access to public transit to ride the bus on Earth Day - Thursday, April 22, 2010. To make these efforts more meaningful, members of both city councils will also be bussing. Perhaps you will see one of them on board - wearing their nametag and holding a clipboard saying “All Aboard On Earth Day! Take this opportunity to discuss transit and other issues with them! In Santa Rosa CityBus will be providing free rides on all routes all day.

On Earth Hour hundreds of millions of people, organizations, corporations and governments around the world will come together to make a bold statement about their concern for climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. Drive-Less/Drive-Smart Tips #3: Minimize Cold-Starts

If you must drive, choose a car that has been driven recently, rather than the one that has been sitting. Starting a cold car? Warm up for 30 seconds, drive gently and avoid use of heater or AC for at least 10 minutes. Car-pool, bus, bike, walk. Cluster errands into the same trips. Avoid cold starts. If there’s a choice, use the engine that’s still warm. Park where you needn’t move your car until the next drive, and can drive off with minimum maneuvering.

Event: 350.org Founder Bill McKibben To Speak Friday

McKibben says that "350 is the most important number in the world" - the number that leading scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide measured in "parts per million" in our atmosphere. "If we can make this number known across the planet, that mere fact will exert some real pressure on negotiators. We need people to understand that 350 marks either success or failure for these climate negotiations."
