Right on livinggreen. We have the ability to solve this problem and it's a lot easier and cheaper than Republic's solution.

Don't forget compostable materials are the best candidate for immediate diversion. Yard trimmings, food scraps and organic materials are technologically simple to process, (not like a mattress, battery or cell phone). Composting fosters local businesses that pay taxes and creates jobs that won't be offshored to Malaysia, it creates a valuable product that sustains our food chain and is vital for sustainable agriculture.

Also note organic materials create methane gas and leachate when landfilled and both of these are a hazard to the environment, so organics and are the logical first choice for landfill diversion. If we put as much time, energy, professional expertise in doing something simple like keeping organics out of landfills as we put into the last three years of legal negotiations with Republic we would be well on our way to solving the outhaul problem, the economic problem, the greenhouse gas problem and supporting sustainable agriculture.
